Chronic Rhinitis
Chronic rhinitis refers to inflammation of the nasal lining that can mimic allergies, colds, nasal congestion, or a chronic sinus infection.
Chronic Rhinitis Symptoms
- Nasal congestion and obstruction
- Clear, watery, or thick nasal discharge
- Sneezing fits
- Post nasal drip
- Cough triggered by postnasal drainage
- Facial pain or headache
- Reduced sense of smell
- Itchy, irritated nose and throat
Chronic Rhinitis Treatment Options
- Allergen avoidance and air filters for allergic rhinitis
- Nasal steroid sprays
- Antihistamines
- Saline irrigations
- Allergy shots, if indicated
- Surgery if structural issues - septoplasty, turbinate reduction
For uncontrolled chronic rhinitis, minimally invasive procedures like posterior nasal nerve ablation with Rhinaer or Clarifix can be helpful.
Causes and Contributing Factors of Chronic Rhinitis
Here is a brief overview of the causes and contributing factors of chronic rhinitis:
- Irritants like cigarette smoke, strong odors
- Changes in weather/temperature
- Medications - Certain blood pressure medications, NSAIDs, and other drugs
- Immune system disorders - Diseases like granulomatosis with polyangiitis and sarcoidosis
- Hormonal changes - Pregnancy or thyroid disorders
- Environmental irritants - Air pollution, chemical smells
With proper management, most symptoms can be adequately controlled, though seasonal exacerbations are common with allergic rhinitis.
