Nasal Polyps
Nasal polyps are noncancerous growths that develop on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses. They range in size from tiny teardrop shapes to large grape-like clusters that can completely obstruct nasal breathing.
Nasal Polyps Symptoms
- Nasal congestion or obstruction
- Runny nose with thick, discolored discharge
- Post nasal drip
- Loss of sense of smell
- Facial pressure or pain
- Snoring or sleep apnea
- Ear fullness or popping with pressure changes
Nasal Polyps Evaluation
- Nasal polyps are visually identified by examining the anterior nose or by nasal endoscopy.
- CT scan help determine size and point of origin.
- Allergy testing and nasal cultures are sometimes needed.
Treatment Approaches for Nasal Polyps
- Steroid nasal sprays
- Oral steroids
- Allergen avoidance and immunotherapy
- Endoscopic sinus surgery - precisely removes polyps obstructing sinus drainage
- Biologic drugs like omalizumab, mepolizumab, and dupilumab
- Recurrence after removal is common, so ongoing medical therapy is key. Medical management provides the best long-term results for symptomatic relief
Causes and Contributing Factors For Nasal Polyps
- Chronic sinus inflammation from allergies and chronic sinusitis
- Non-allergic rhinitis
- Cystic fibrosis
- Aspirin sensitivity and NSAID hypersensitivity
- Immunodeficiency syndromes
- Cigarette smoke and air pollution
