Septal Deviation
Septal deviation is an abnormal bend in the wall between the nasal passages. This can cause obstruction and breathing difficulties.
Septal Deviation Symptoms
- Nasal congestion or blockage
- Noisy breathing
- Snoring or sleep apnea
- Nosebleeds
- Facial pain and headaches
- Recurrent sinus infections
Treatment Options for Septal Deviation
- Mild septal deviations may not require treatment.
- Decongestants and antihistamines to reduce swelling
- Steroid and antihistamine nasal sprays can also help shrink tissue swelling
- Nasal strips that lift the nasal passages open
- Septoplasty to straighten the septum. It inloves removing and repositioning portions of spetal bone and cartilage
Causes and Contributing Factors of Septal Deviations
- Sports injuries, auto accidents, or falls where the nose hits an object forcefully. The impact dislodges the cartilage from its proper position.
- Many patients are born with a septal deviation
- Past surgeries like rhinoplasty can cause unintentional septal deformities
