Runny nose refers to clear watery drainage from the front of the nose that may occur all day long or be triggered by eating or cold temperatures.
Runny Nose Symptoms
The main symptom of a runny nose with watery discharge is thin, clear mucus dripping from the front of your nose.
- Frequent need to wipe or blow your nose
- Nasal congestion and stuffiness
- Sneezing fits, especially in cases caused by allergies
- Itchy nose, ears, eyes or throat
- Reduced sense of smell
- Fatigue from congestion and sleep disruption
Treatment Options for Runny Nose
Treatment depends on the cause but may involve:
- Nasal steroid sprays like fluticasone to reduce inflammation in allergic and nonallergic rhinitis
- Antihistamines like loratadine or cetirizine for allergic rhinitis
- Decongestant nasal sprays for temporary relief of congestion
- Saline nasal rinses to flush out mucus and soothe nasal passages
- Antibiotics for bacterial sinus infections or colds
- Intranasal anticholinergics like ipratropium for watery, nonallergic rhinorrhea
- Avoiding irritants or allergens that trigger symptoms
- Humidifier to add moisture to dry air
- Posterior nasal nerve ablation for chronic rhinitis
